Jane Canfield can be seen hurtling along in her little van with her poodle – visiting out west or up and down the coast, working from life wherever possible.
Nothing brings me greater joy than to be working en Plein Air, working quickly to try to capture the moment. Blocks of colour and tone attract me and ‘looking through to something’. Maybe a distant view or just a panel of light at the end of a road. Working from life makes me work fast. Changing light, vans parking in front of me! Anything can change from moment to moment. So by being more instant, I hope to just capture a feeling and retain a freshness, expressiveness and spontaneity in my work.
I’m always taken by the panels of colour created in the urban environment… rooftops, fences, sheds. I often wander around with my little poodle looking for inspiration and when taken by something will just plonk myself down on the grass and try to capture what I see.
Bridge Series was painted en Plein Air in Northern New South Wales while Jane was on a residency in 2014. For this work, using hand made boards to paint on, Jane captures her fascination with the huge, disused railway bridges that straddle the flood plains and create a framework in the landscape.
