Serge, from Marie Bernard
Colour, Narrative, and the Influence of Family
Serge’s vibrant, colour-rich works are deeply influenced by Judith Judith Linhares, whom he discovered years ago. “Her paintings glow and ooze colour,” he says, admiring how her timeless palette remains fresh despite being born in 1940. “Her visual language is a mix of cartoon-inspired vocabulary and naïve painting,” Serge explains.
Equally important is the influence of his family, particularly his mother, aunts, and wife. “I was raised by a single mom, so this question is a no-brainer,” Serge reflects. “She gave me the freedom to find my own way, and that helped me discover who I was.” He also credits his wife Masja, calling her “very resolute, never too busy to critique my work, yet always supportive.”
