Shifting Perceptions of 'Craft'
The issue of inequality in the art world is central to Meg Walters’ thoughts, particularly the gender pay gap and the ongoing struggle for equal representation. “Recently, there has been an increased awareness of the gender pay gap and the continued inequality faced by women in every profession around the world. I'd love to say that the art world has pioneered this movement, but I feel as though we're just as behind as most fields.” She is encouraged, however, by the increasing recognition of traditionally feminine mediums, such as textiles and ceramics. "We continue to subvert and push mediums that were once deemed ‘unworthy’ of the fine art world," she notes. “Each gallery, curator, and institution that recognises what women are bringing to the table gives us equal space.” For Meg, art is political rebellion— “it's a fundamental questioning of our systems and perspectives on the world. The lines are always shifting, always moving. As an artist, I feel honoured to shine a torch on the unknown path ahead for all women.”
