Exploring Freedom
Piet Raemdonck is inspired by artists whose work embodies freedom and sensuality. “I’ve loved watching Rose Wylie and her bold yet sensual approach—there’s such freedom in her visuals,” he says. He also admires Janice Nowinski’s painterly nudes for their energy, and when blocked, he found inspiration in Christina Zimpel’s Instagram work, sharing, “It helped me, and I made sure to let her know.” Raemdonck reflects on influential women artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Meret Oppenheimer, Louise Bourgeois, and Käthe Kollwitz, whose self-portraits have deeply shaped his approach. He also cites Mona Hatoum’s solo exhibition at Antwerp’s MHKA as a lasting influence. His thoughts underscore the crucial role of women in art, challenging the male-dominated narrative in art history.
