Greg Wood
Inspirations Past and Present
Greg Wood reflects on the profound impact that contemporary and historical female artists have had on his creative journey. He acknowledges artists like Michaye Boulter, Mary Tonkin, Sara Maher, Zoe Amor, Laura Veleff and Emma Bingham, noting, “If you know the work of these artists, you may have an idea as to how they influence me and my practice.” For Wood, these artists share a common thread in their “execution of subject and atmosphere; a felt space,” a concept that drives his work. He continues, “It is this felt space that motivates and drives my art,” pointing to a shared curiosity about the unknown and the exploration of self. Ambiguity, both internal and external, is key in their work, a feeling that “leaves you all tingly.” This sense of mystery continues to inspire him to create. Looking back to history, Wood finds inspiration in Clarice Beckett, an Australian artist known for her atmospheric landscapes. He says, “Since first viewing Beckett's work way back in my early 20s, I have had a profound respect for her incredible vision.” Wood is particularly moved by Beckett’s perseverance, noting how she worked despite societal expectations and limited resources, using the kitchen table instead of a studio. Her devotion to her craft has been a lasting influence on his own practice.
