Joel Sorensen
Sculpture as a Living Organism
For Joel Sorensen, the works of Louise Bourgeois—especially her iconic bronze spiders—left an indelible mark. Joel reflects, “Bourgeois' body of work has the feeling of an organism; the work does not stop at their execution and they seem to multiply. Her unique, unbounded approach to art making is awe-inspiring. The manipulation of so many mediums to her will breaks open what sculpture can be and can express. The feelings that are ignited by her work are strangely familiar and yet extend far outside the frames of reference I have for sculpture. How incredible to think of her large bronze spiders populating public spaces around the world."
Bourgeois’ unbounded approach to art, her ability to breathe life into her sculptures, has influenced Joel’s own exploration of materials and form, pushing him to think beyond traditional confines and embrace a more organic, expansive approach.
