This intimate piece sheds light on the motivation behind Colin’s movement to abstraction and non-literal representations. Currently based in Noosa, Colin’s work is highly gestural and utilises a beautiful array of colours, as a way of representing his emotions through oil paint.
Studying art in London during the mid-80s, Colin’s practice is reflective of his formal training and his raw talent as a contemporary artist. Since leaving New York in 2001 and moving to Australia, Colin reveals that he avoids literal representation in his work after experiencing a series of troubling events.
He recently completed his largest painting to date without any sketch or reference, approaching the work as though it were a book – from left to right. Colin’s work is a reminder of the beauty and subtlety of the human experience and the breadth of emotions we experience.
"To me paint is a spectrum which represents life in light, but as you mix colours the paint goes muddy and dull. Paint is like light with failure added in."
