oona calx has been working on various projects since 2018, both in South Africa and Namibia. calx is the collective of two South African artists, Daniella Mooney and Anna van der Ploeg, currently based in Berlin and Gent respectively. Drawing from the initial concept of movement, momentum and resourcefulness, calx advances these ideas by merging practices and skill sets. Their process of making emerges from an affinity for intuiting surroundings through sensing stones, and sometimes the desire to commune with them. calx is a moving and constantly evolving entity, gaining knowledge and experience by perceiving and quietly observing. As calx develops her growing practice she aims for this process of walking, feeling and seeing to be one that connects all forms of spaces, interprets them with two minds, and responds with four hands. The works of Tripping stone were developed through, or despite, partnership over distance. The conversations these works present come out of an interest in combining rock-infused landscapes with painting and collaboration. Negotiating attractive forces; push, pull, and the weight of space over time, are elements in constant play throughout this body of work.
