Piet Raemdonck is a Belgian artist who lives and paints from his studio near Ghent. Piet is stimulated by his surroundings and his work focuses on still life, landscape and interior spaces. His paintings play with contrast, between the naïve and the classical, between abstract geometry and distinctive romanticism. The movement of the brush or crayon may resemble primitive expression and his work is rich in texture. Colour is at the core of Piet's work. He is fascinated by the way in which colours communicate and influence one another.

Piet Raemdonck has been exhibiting with galleries in Belgium and the Netherlands since 1994. In 2007, he opened an exhibition space for his own work in the modernist Fierens building in Antwerp.  In late 2017, Piet's work was shown in a two-venue exhibition in Havana, Cuba. Piet's paintings feature in the film Hannah, starring Charlotte Rampling. He has also collaborated with Axel Vervoordt, Gert Voorjans, Dries Van Noten and Christian Wijnants, amongst others.

Piet notes - 'The Residere series was created over a period of two years. This body of work is a reflection and a turning point in my life, leaving Antwerp after almost 30 years and moving to the countryside where I grew up.  It is about a desire to settle down. The Latin word Residere comes from 're' - meaning back and 'sedere' - to sit.  A need to settle down but not to becoming too static, rather balanced and focused. Pavillion is the earliest work in the series. It was made after three trips to Cuba over a year, staying at a Havana Beach House. Scharnierstraat shows a street in Antwerp that turns, not yet revealing where it is going.  Breekwerk, Klein Breekwerk, Project, Assembly and Sun from the South are all observations of my newly renovated Studio / Home. These works embody the fresh start and energetic transformation. During our renovation, I have experienced unexpected beauty and romanticism in still life.'

'A PAINTING CAN BE PERCEIVED AS A GROUP OF COLOURS THAT BOTH CONVERGE AND DIVERGE.

I AM VERY INVOLVED WITH COLOUR, AND I’VE DONE A LOT OF STUDY AND RESEARCH.

I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT NOT TO LIMIT MYSELF TO CERTAIN COLOURS, BUT TO ACCEPT THEM ALL.

I’M FASCINATED BY HOW COLOURS RELATE TO EACH OTHER AND HOW THEY INTERACT.

I LIKE TO FOCUS ON THE CYCLICAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COLOURS.

THAT MAY SOUND VERY THEORETICAL, BUT, IN FACT, IT’S PLAYFUL.'

'You can compare my paintings to a universe you enter, just by looking at it.

It is a game of recognition and non-recognition.

I give visual clues and from there you must continue following your senses.'
