Reflections on Motherhood and Society
Caroline Cornelius’ art explores the societal expectations of women, particularly mothers. "My work is an exploration of motherhood," she shares, "a role that often feels diminished as a woman ages." She reflects on her experiences, “As a woman who has experienced motherhood and who now is entering a period where that role is less central to my life. I frequently reflect back on my feelings and experience of that time in my work. As an older woman now, I notice how our visibility in society often feels diminished. It seems that as a woman’s natural period of fertility declines, so do we. Its something that as a younger woman I didn’t foresee.” Drawing inspiration from Madonna’s career, Caroline admires how the icon broke societal norms, rewriting her own narrative and becoming a powerful, assertive role model for women everywhere. “I can’t say I was a die hard fan of her music but she was truly the first role model that I was aware of who appeared to be writing her own rules with her career. She was not afraid to be perceived as aggressive or powerful.”
