In Conversation: Meg Walters

Vantage Point: Paddington, Sydney

Otomys is proud to present Vantage Point - a group exhibition bringing together seven artists in Paddington, Sydney from 15 - 25 October 2026.

Seven artists, seven vantage points, one room - close enough to compare, distinct enough to hold their own. Vantage Point is the second exhibition in the Otomys In Residence programme, following Still Point at Villa Alba Museum in 2025.

152 - 154 Jersey Road, Paddington, Sydney, 2021

OTOMYS: What was your intention behind the work in Vantage Point?

Meg Walters: Lately I've been drawn to capturing an atmospheric quality in my paintings. I'm hoping to find a nuance or subtlety of colour that is both compelling and soft around the edges, and a dream-like quality that lulls the viewer into a world that feels at once slightly destabilising and familiar. I'm less interested in painting what I see directly; I feel much more compelled to translate a specific set of experiences into a visual language. I like to disrupt our sense of what is real and what is imagined, playing with the horizon line, with reflections, and with figures and shapes that bleed into the foreground and background at the same time. This subverts the ‘image' and perhaps shifts our subconscious, momentarily, onto another plane of reality.

OTOMYS: Have you noticed any subtle or significant shifts in your practice while creating this body of work?

Meg Walters: I’ve spent a lot of time with this painting. It really has painted itself; all I've felt I needed to do was respond to what it was asking. My mind has been quieter lately, so I could really hear the painting whisper to me, giving me direction. It's a lovely experience when that happens, and I hope it's something I can carry through my practice, though I appreciate that some paintings are a whisper and some are more of a scream.

OTOMYS: What does Vantage Point mean to you now, and how has your thinking around it developed?

Meg Walters: I love the title of this show because it speaks to each of our individual sensibilities as artists, bringing our unique perspectives together under one roof. I'm thrilled to share my view of the world within it. I think a lot about perspective in my work, and how much I enjoy throwing the rule book out the window. The liberties you can take with a painting, and the surprises that reveal themselves when you take risks, are one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

When creating Seven Moons, I thought about how the painting could read as a reflection, a dream, a memory or something else entirely. Although it begins with a real moment, it stays open to interpretation, and that openness brings many different views into the energy of the painting itself.

I also believe that every day I am a wholly different person. Each time I returned to this painting over the past few months, I came to it as someone new, bringing a different set of ideas, perspectives and intentions.
