Tom Borgas Wins 2023 Adelaide Parklands Art Prize in the Digital Art Category

Otomys is thrilled to announce that Tom Borgas has been announced the winner of the 2023 Adelaide Parklands Art prize in the Digital Art Category. His winning artwork, entitled Hyperobject (Kadaltilla), combines photography, digital collage and 3D rendering to create an impression of his sculpture within the south eastern corner of the Adelaide Park Lands. Tom has described his work as a “vivid and colourful cluster of sculptural components” that acts as a form of “speculative architecture,” capturing an artwork whilst in the “process of becoming.”

Tom's full artist statement reads: "Positioned amongst a “Heysenesque” site in the south eastern corner of the Adelaide Park Lands, Hyperobject (Kadaltilla)* is a vividly colourful cluster of sculptural components- a speculative architecture of sorts, captured whilst still in the process of becoming. Forming through its own imaginary logic of material and forces, it softly comes to rest in the landscape– itself a rich ecology of human and non-human, seen and unseen connections. *First coined in 2008 by speculative philosopher Timothy Morton, Hyperobjects are intimately present entities but with vast temporal and spatial dimensions that defeat traditional ideas about what a thing is. Examples include the stock exchange, evolution, the internet and global warming. Morton’s reframing of thingness serves to reformat old notions of how we coexist with one another and with nonhumans, and how we experience our politics, ethics, and art."
