The Design Files: This NT-Based Youth Worker/Artist Explores Notions Of Identity, Belonging and Otherness In Vivid Colour

Sasha Gattermayr from The Design Files writes about the art practice of Zak Tilley.  Gattermayr explores the different engagement workshops in community development programs that Tilley takes part in, across arts centres on Luritja Country.

The article also covers the very beginnings of Tilley's practice, taking us back to his art school days where he says "I personally found art school challenging, in that it wasn’t user-friendly for me or my practice.... it took several years after graduating to become comfortable with my skill, and find the courage to express myself through art".

Gattermayr observes that Zak's artistic journey involves a persistent exploration of Australian identity, where he scrutinizes the truths behind its narratives and reflects on his place within a broader national context.
