“Casuarina After the Bushfire’ is an interpretation of the cycles of growth, renewal, life and death. The cyclical seasonality we’re all a part of, whether we acknowledge our connection to nature or not. Like all my work, each landscape is an invitation to broadly inquire about our inner and outer world, and how they are inextricably linked. How our internal landscape mirrors that of our external environment.

The paint is applied and erased at various stages, allowing the image to unfold from its original drawing and composition. This layered build-up and visual erosion creates a world that is at once chaotic and serene. Distilled from this process is an eventual image, one that is distorted and a departure from the original place – much like how our perception of the world and ourselves is altered over time.

This painting is a philosophical and spiritual lamentation of seasons, cycles, birth, death and renewal. Offering glimpses through the tangled branches and gnarled roots is a place of innate stillness. The viewer is asked to meditate on their experience with nature. We’re reminded of the chaos of the world, yet within lies a state of calm and steadiness. Buried deep within each layer of leaf litter is the potential for regeneration.

I’m interested in how we are in a constant state of flux and growth, mimicking nature. This painting offers a glimpse into the beauty of unbridled chaos. It’s a reminder to let go and surrender to the many states of being.”
