On Collecting: Emerging Artists

There is a particular closeness that comes with collecting an emerging artist. You are present to a practice in motion, connected to its concerns. For collectors working with a contemporary art gallery, that proximity is precisely the point. Early patronage matters too. It gives artists the conditions to work with intention and ambition, to take the risks that define a career. A collection built with emerging artists in mind has a role in the culture it reflects.
Collecting original art also means living with work of genuine quality. Work that, as recognition follows, becomes increasingly difficult to access at the same level of intimacy. Emerging artists are making work now, in direct response to the present moment. That energy and restlessness finds its way into the work itself. It's where we focus our attention at Otomys, and where some of the most compelling work by Australian and International artists is being made.
